Simplified Issue vs Guaranteed Issue: Which Should You Choose?

Both simplified-issue and guaranteed-issue final expense policies skip the medical exam. The key difference is that simplified-issue asks health questions (and can decline you), while guaranteed-issue asks none and cannot decline. This trade-off affects both price and how quickly you're fully covered.

Simplified issue

You answer a short list of yes/no health questions (usually 10–15). If you pass, you're approved for full first-day coverage at the best available rate. If you don't pass, you may still qualify for graded or guaranteed-issue coverage.

Guaranteed issue

No health questions. Everyone ages 50–80 is approved. The trade-off: a 2-year graded period during which death by natural causes returns only your premiums plus interest. Accidental death is usually paid in full from day one. After 2 years, the full benefit pays regardless of cause.

Recommendation

If you're in reasonably good health, always start with simplified-issue — the rates and immediate coverage are worth answering a few questions. If you've been declined before, or have serious health conditions, guaranteed-issue guarantees you cannot be turned away.

Frequently asked

What happens if I die in the first 2 years of a guaranteed-issue policy?

Most carriers refund all premiums paid plus 10% interest. Accidental death is usually paid at full benefit from day one.

Is simplified-issue always cheaper?

For healthy applicants, yes — often 30–50% cheaper than guaranteed-issue. For those with serious health issues who wouldn't pass simplified underwriting, guaranteed-issue is the only path to coverage.
